Geometric Electric
I’m pleased to share the release of a new series of prints available for purchase now via Society6. Geometric Electric combines illustrated women with my love of geometric shapes and technical illustration.
Subject matter and style
The drawings are surreal and minimalist depicting women in abstract geometric spaces in shades of terracotta, siennas, and dusty greens. The repetition of shapes and patterns makes them slightly decorative, but I kept the compositions simple.
What inspired the print series?
These pieces came together quickly, almost automatically, in early 2021. So I thought I’d share a little about their inception and the personal experiences that inspired their look and feel.
Earlier this year I took a pandemic-motivated train trip that passed through the high plains and desert of New Mexico. The red soil and dusty green plant life reinforced my long-standing fascination with the various shades of terracotta and sienna. The color palette I chose for this print series is a reflection of that stark yet comfortingly earthy environment.
At the same time, I was reading Georgia O'Keeffe: Living Modern, which traces the development of the artist’s personal style rather than her art. It was illuminating, to say the least. The way O’Keeffe concerned herself with modernity — designing her life, her home, and her clothes around it — seems very much reflected in contemporary trends. Much of what interests me most in contemporary design such as minimalism, form+function, and bringing nature indoors are all things she helped establish over half a century ago.
For me, reading about O’Keefe designing her life the way she designed her artwork, added historicity, legitimacy, and a thread of connectedness to current trends. Stuck at home during the pandemic, I’ve been reevaluating my own space. I’ve been looking at Scandinavian and Japandi design and thinking of ways to design for earthiness and warmth while remaining essentially modern. Being able to imagine a side of modernity that’s organic and natural rather than sleek and plastic has surely affected this body of work. These prints were developed with that type of modern, minimalist, organic space in mind.
